It is the first case in Europe of a sustainability intervention financed in crowdlending by local community participants. The 25 kWp photovoltaic system installed on the roof of the NaturaSì organic food shop in Ponte San Nicolò was completely crowd-funded by customers from across Italy with the help of the SUPER-HEERO crowdlending platform.

The inauguration placed relevant local stakeholders, such as the authorities of Padova, Viemme, the company that manages the NaturaSì shop, R2M Solution, the project’s lead company, as well as other members of the community and the entire team behind the SUPER-HEERO project. The event ended with a toast and a buffet of organic products and with the taking of an official photo for the European Commission, testifying to the important goal achieved.

This is just the beginning for Italian and European communities to invest in the way they think. Thomas Messervey, CEO of R2M Solution and SUPER-HEERO project coordinator, and Rodrigo Morell, CEO of CREARA – Energy Experts, made a joint welcome to the event, which was followed by several experts in sustainability, retail, and supermarkets both in the Impact Hub Barceló in Madrid (Spain), and online, through digital channels.

After the introduction, the first block of contents started with Pedro Luis Espejo, from CREARA – Energy Experts, who showcased the initiative approach and the learnings related to how to enhance sustainability without initial investment. Then, Gerardo López, from Supermercados COVIRÁN, shared with the attendees its company’s business and sustainability models, highlighting its compromise and values. After this case study, Cristina Barbero, from R2M solution, took the floor to showcase the SUPER-HEERO and NaturaSì joint experience, marking the milestones achieved and the main findings that the project will take into consideration for upcoming projects.

The second phase of the Final Event of SUPER-HEERO was the shared knowledge by energy experts. Moderated by Nuria Cardoso, from ASEDAS (the Spanish Association of Distributors, Self-Service, and Supermarkets), the panel discussion set a 360-discussion about the main strategies and topics that any business strategist should set in their energy plans. Álvaro Sánchez, from ReDream project and CEO of Stemy, Ignacio Guerrero, CTO of Ampere Energy, Rodrigo Morell, CEO of CREARA – Energy Experts, and Luis Molano, CEO of Senda Energy gave many insights from their own experience and provided different approaches for energy savings for retail, supermarkets, and other shop owners.

SUPER-HEERO sets its last steps and strategies

After the Final Event celebration, the SUPER-HEERO consortium partners celebrated its last General Assembly Meeting. Following the introduction of Thomas Messervey, CEO of R2M and SUPER-HEERO project coordinator, each Work Package leader took the floor to highlight its activity from the last months and exposed how the project will achieve its final milestones and close the final deliverables. In the words of Messervey: “The SUPER-HEERO project showed us what teamwork and effort could do. The success of our first pilot in Padova points to us what are the main findings that we must follow and how we should face our upcoming projects in Italy and Spain. The end of our assigned activities won’t mean the end of the SUPER-HEERO action: it’s just the beginning of the change for energy efficiency and consumer engagement in supermarkets”.

SUPER-HEERO: Best Practice Award

In this international event, the SUPER-HEERO project was showcased as best practice through the paper entitled “Energy Efficiency renovation packages for European Supermarkets”. Bonvicini and Abd Alla presented this initiative in front of a wide audience of experts, in a work developed alongside prepared with Nora Ganzinelli from RINA, Cristina Barbero and Thomas Messervey from R2M Solution

In the words of Bonvicini: “As citizens, we must contribute to a better future by taking care of the environment and SUPER-HEERO could help us to take those ambitions further. Our approach to make energy efficiency closer to supermarkets will be key for Spanish and Italian retail owners, who could have better performing buildings where energy, water, and materials will be used in a more sustainable way”.

SUPER-HEERO action in Padova and Veneto Region

As the main goal of SUPER-HEERO is close energy efficiency in supermarkets to local consumers and other stakeholders, this will allow the NaturaSì local shop owners the installation of photovoltaic panels on the roof with a nominal power of 24 kW, while the investors will get a gross annual interest rate up to 7% and a special card for the Padua local NaturaSì’s shop.

NaturaSì is one of the most important Italian supermarkets and a symbol of the GDO dedicated to the production and sale of organic products that follow ethical criteria along the production chain. It has about 300 points of sale throughout Italy with an annual turnover of around €500 million.

After the kick-off from past March 31, the campaign has been opened to all Italian investors from all around the country on April 26, completing the raising within less than the first 24 hours. Once this project is already closed, SUPER-HEERO and Italian partner R2M Solution will start planning the next projects in the Veneto region, as well as other potential territories in Italy and Spain.

In the words of Thomas Messervey, CEO at R2M Solutions and SUPER-HEERO’s project coordinator: “The first campaign has been a complete success for Italian customers, as well as represent the massive opportunity that both Padova and Veneto region now face to accelerate the energy efficiency full transition. His role involves the setup and coordination of the upcoming crowdfunding platform of SUPER-HEERO, where consumers and supermarkets will find each other in a very simple way, combining financing and environmental benefits for each side.

What are your expectations from the SUPER-HEERO project?

The Great Organized Distribution is a high energy demand sector and with the SUPER-HEERO project, we expect to find the best technical and financial solution for decarbonizing this field. SUPER-HEERO project can be one of the best projects in Europe and create an innovative solution for a sector that is still clinging to the past.

What is the main role of E2C in SUPER-HEERO?

Ener2Crowd is the leader in sustainable investments and our role is to develop a specific crowdfunding platform for the GDO customers and to find innovative financial solutions suitable for the energy retrofitting of the supermarkets.

Can you talk a bit more about the crowdfunding platform that you have created for the project?

The platform automatically lets people directly invest in the energy retrofitting of their supermarket. People can take to the opportunity proposed and invest in form of a loan in the project starting from a minimum investment equal to 100€. The process is very easy and fast: register, open a wallet and invest. The aim is to involve people who can get a double benefit from their trusted supermarket: an economical benefit from the investment and an environmental benefit deriving from the reduction of the energy consumption of the supermarket.

Why do you consider such a platform as needed and how do you think it could benefit society as a whole?

During the COVID pandemic, people used their trusted supermarkets as their sole socializing place. Supermarkets became the only moment where people could talk to each other physically. With Climate Change and with the SUPER-HEERO crowdfunding platform, the supermarket can become a small part of the energy transition process and people can take part in it. Supermarkets can share the benefit of the energy retrofitting of the building directly with their customers making their customers themselves a fundamental part of their decarbonizing process.

What do you think will be the main outcomes of the SUPER-HEERO project?

The SUPER-HEERO project will create a standard for the GDO field letting people be part of the decarbonizing process of this sector. We hope that this attitude will become common in whole the supermarkets.
